Medihelp offers 10% saving on network options in 2013

Medihelp has included a network option on its Dimension Prime range of benefit options which will cost members on average 10% less in subscription fees in 2013. This means that Medihelp’s annual weighted average increase of 11.2% for 2013 will amount to increases of between 0% and 2.4% for those members who choose one of the Dimension Prime network options next year.

Giving something back to the community

Recently Medihelp had been the title sponsor of two running- and walking events, one in Durban and the other in the Western Cape. The Medihelp Dolphin Coast Ultra Challenge took place in Ballito and attracted more than 1 500 athletes, excluding spectators. Similarly, the Medihelp Tekkie Challenge in Kuils River netted almost 2 000 runners and walkers and more than 600 lookers-on.

Private hospital admissions: how does it work?

Working at a medical scheme a question I often hear is: should I register my hospital admission first or can I simply go to the hospital? In effect there are two types of hospital admissions: regular admissions and admissions in life-threatening emergencies. Normally, where a life-threatening emergency is not applicable, all admissions must be pre-registered. In Medihelp’s case we prefer to be notified of an admission at least 72 hours prior to being admitted. In case of a life-threatening emergency admission (the very nature of which prevents pre-registration) the admission must usually be registered on the first workday after the emergency.

Last night I was watching television when the now all too familiar ‘hospital cash back plan’ (HCP) advertisement came up. You know the one where some celebrity in a hospital bed proclaims the value of having one of these plans in an emergency situation. As the advertisement dragged on I realised that it did make sense from a certain point of view. It is a simple insurance policy that covers a set amount per day for your hospitalisation needs. In addition some plans offer cash-back incentives as well as no-claims bonuses. In a nutshell it seems to mean that your monthly premium is less than that of a typical hospital plan offered by a registered medical scheme and that you have the chance to get some of your hard-earned cash back in your pocket?

Financial results equate to more than just a balance sheet

The onset of winter is usually also the time when medical schemes and other organisations release their financial results for the previous year. This year has been no exception with Medihelp releasing its own set of results recently. A quick look reveals an impressive performance: the Scheme ended the financial year with a net surplus of R163.9 million and a solvency ratio of 29.2%.
