Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) are a set of defined benefits introduced by the Department of Health to ensure that all medical scheme members have access to certain minimum health services, regardless of their benefit option. The aim is to avoid incidents where individuals lose their medical scheme cover in the event of serious illness and to encourage improved efficiency in the allocation of healthcare resources.

PMB follow a diagnosis-based approach – when deciding whether a condition qualifies for PMB, only the symptoms are considered, and not any other factors, such as how the injury or condition was contracted.
