2017 Medihelp Bike & Tekkie Challenge

Charity event in aid of children with special educational needs
On Saturday, 2 September 2017 the Medihelp Bike & Tekkie Challenge comes to Kuils River. This fun event for the whole family is the perfect way to herald in the start of spring while you support our charity and make a difference in the lives of learing-disabled children.

Starting times

  • MTB Challenge 20 km: 07:00 (cut-off time: 09:00)
  • MTB Challenge 40 km: 07:00 (cut-off time: 10:15)
  • 10 km Battle of the Sexes:* 08:00 (cut-off time: 10:00)
    *Women get a head start; men's start time determined on race day.
  • 5 km & 4Paws: 08:15
  • Kids' events: 09:30 onwards

  • Mountain biking: 20 km & 40 km on the rugby field behind Jan Kriel School buildings
  • Running: 10 km, 5 km & 4Paws at the entrance road to Jan Kriel School buildings

Road race and fun run

The road race and fun run events are held over 10 km and 5 km while there will the Nappy and Kiddies run as well as the popular 4Paws fun run for your four-legged friends will also be held as part of the 5 km fun run/walk.

Mountain biking information

Two mountain biking events are held over 20 km and 40 km covering the breathtakingly beautiful routes in the Bottelary Hills Conservancy.

General

  • Follow the directions from Church Street to the entrances for free parking. Security guards will be on duty from 06:00.
  • Please arrive well in advance to avoid traffic delays and to be in time for the start of the race. Gates open at 05:30.
  • Hot and cold refreshments will be on sale.
  • Medical support will be available along the route as well as at the finish.
  • 4Paws participants must wear the official badge to qualify for the lucky-draw prizes. Water bowls will be provided along the route. No leash, no walk!

    • Two lucky-draw prizes will be awarded to animals wearing the official badge.

Late entries and race day entries

  • Late entries will be accepted on Friday, 1 September at Jan Kriel School between 12:00 and 18:00.
  • Race-day entries will be accepted on Saturday, 2 September, from 06:00 until 15 minutes prior to each start.

Running race rules

This event is held under the rules of IAAF, ASA and Western Province Athletics, and is organised by the Jan Kriel Institute and the Cape Multisport Club. Refer to www.wpa.org.za or 021 699 0615.

  1. The minimum age for the 10 km event on race day is 14 years.
    An adult must accompany a Fun Run (5 km) participant younger than 10 years.
  2. All runners and walkers must obey traffic officers and marshals.
  3. Licensed runners must wear club colours and display a 2017 licence on the front and back of the vest.
    The official race number must partially cover the licence number on the front.
  4. Temporary licensed runners must wear plain vests displaying the licence on the back and the official race number on the front of the vest.
  5. Runners must display age category tags to qualify for age category prizes.
  6. Club colours must be worn to qualify for team prizes.
  7. Wheelchair entrants must contact the organisers to arrange their participation.
  8. Entry cards / official race numbers must be worn and must be visible for the duration of the race.
  9. No personal seconding will be permitted. Ample refreshment stations will be provided.
  10. Tog bag and toilet facilities are provided at the venue (start & finish) and can be used at own risk.
  11. The cut-off time for the 10 km race and Fun Run is 10:00. Prize-giving starts at 10:15.
  12. No littering. Dispose of water sachets and cups responsibly. Report offenders to referees.
  13. For safety reasons, ASA rule 30.10.6 prohibits the use of personal music players. Runners who do not adhere to this rule may be disqualified.
  14. Any ruling by the race committee will be considered final.

Mountain biking rules

The biking event is held with the kind support of the farmers within the MTB trail system of the Bottelary Hills and according to the rules of the Conservancy.

  1. No helmet, no ride.
  2. Carrying a cell phone is recommended.
  3. The minimum age to enter the 40 km race is 16 years.
  4. An adult companion is compulsory for riders under 10 years who enter the 20 km race.
    The companion must enter separately to be eligible for a medal, Brekkie Bun and prizes.
  5. Number boards must be displayed for the duration of the event.
    Emergency numbers must appear on the reverse side.
  6. The cut-off times are 09:00 for the 20 km and 10:15 for the 40 km race.
  7. General traffic rules apply in urban areas. Obey all traffic officers and marshals.
  8. Farm and official vehicles have right of way on the trails. Be on the lookout.
  9. Do not stray off the marked routes.
  10. Do not tamper with plants or provoke animals.
  11. No littering. Leave only your tracks.
