Pretoria, South Africa -- As part of their commitment to promote healthy, active lifestyles, Medihelp medical scheme, one of the largest medical schemes in South Africa, is sponsoring the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour for the second consecutive year.

Taking place on Sunday, 3 December 2017, the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycling Tour is the Western Cape’s second biggest cycling event and the final race that determines cyclists’ placement for the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour. The challenging 97 km route caters for novice and experienced cyclists alike, scaling Helshoogte Pass with a 1 285 m ascent before enjoying a long descent through Pniel and meandering through the picturesque towns of Wemmershoek and Wellington. Cyclists will start and finish the race at Stellenbosch High School.

Apart from being title sponsor, Medihelp is also supporting the SA Blind Tandem Association in the event. Based in the Western Cape, the club enables blind and partially sighted persons to participate in and enjoy the sport of cycling. Medihelp will sponsor eight club members, who will each be accompanied on a tandem bicycle by a sighted person, who acts as his/her pilot.

“Medihelp’s involvement will contribute greatly to raising awareness of the sport of tandem cycling for blind and near-blind people. Without their support and especially the support of the pilots undertaking this journey with us, we would not be able to enjoy the privilege of participating in these events,” said Cindy Jacobsz, spokesperson of the SA Blind Tandem Association.

Said Heyn van Rooyen, Principal Officer of Medihelp: “It is a privilege to be associated with an event like this that promotes a healthy lifestyle and enables people from all walks of life to participate. We trust each cyclist will have a rewarding and enjoyable experience.”

Although the online entry process has closed, cyclists still have until Saturday, 2 December to register for the event at designated registration venues. Please visit for all race-related information.
