In 1967, the Medical Schemes Act was introduced, defining medical schemes and ensuring equitable healthcare. Two years later, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) was established. Medical milestones included the first human heart transplant in Cape Town by Dr Christiaan Barnard in 1967.
