South African history

The 1976 Soweto Uprising marked a turning point in the fight against apartheid. Meanwhile, the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, South Africa’s first and only nuclear power station, began construction. Television is introduced to South Africa. South African physicists and inventors Robert Ledley and Allan Cormack were awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work on the CT scan.

Medihelp history

Medihelp introduced significant technological advancements, including an offset printer and computerisation. In 1977, the organisation moved into its own building at 84 Beatrix Street (now 415 Steve Biko Road) in Pretoria. The building cost R1.7 million to erect. This decade also sees the introduction of general sales tax (GST).
