South African history
In 1985, Dr Nthato Motlana established Lesedi Clinic in Soweto, the first black-owned private hospital. The Medical Schemes Amendment Act of 1984 brought significant changes to healthcare regulations. South Africa also built its first operational nuclear weapon, and Desmond Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The PSMAA expanded its administration capabilities to include Polmed and Prismed (later Medcor). New computer systems were installed to improve efficiency. In 1982, a logo was registered.
