Earning Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points is the responsibility of every registered health practitioner in South Africa and is governed by law.

While you can earn points by attending accredited events or by completing accredited courses and reading journal articles, you can also make technology work for you. Let’s look at a few alternative ways you can earn the necessary CPD points in 2024.

  1. Do a free online course
  2. Gone are the days when you needed to do all courses in person. There are a multitude of excellent online courses available for free. The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) has a handy list of organisationsoffering online training, including Colgate, Wright Millners, and deNovo Medica. Most of these organisations will even keep track of your points and submit them to the HPCSA on your behalf

  3. Use the Department of Health’s KnowledgeHub
  4. The Department of Health KnowledgeHub connects you to relevant, up-to-date professional development opportunities and resources. The KnowledgeHub offers live webinars, online courses, and an eLibrary. Courses are self-paced, CPD accredited, and free for all healthcare professionals.

  5. Listen to a podcast
  6. If you struggle to find time to do an online course, why not listen to a podcast? Services like CPD pod are paid-for services that offer podcasts for registered psychologists, psychometrists, and registered counsellors. Free podcast SamaPod, run by the South African Medical Association, is the go-to place for quality content. They hand-pick interesting people to produce weekly episodes in their area of expertise.

  7. Listen to lectures online
  8. Do you miss going to interesting medical lectures? Why not give online lectures a chance? Medtalkz is an open access medical education platform for South African health professionals that gives you access to presentations and lectures across all fields of medicine. And best of all, it is absolutely free and accredited, so you earn CPD points!

  9. Read journal articles
  10. The tried and tested method of reading journal articles, especially ones with multiple choice questions (MCQs), are a great way to earn CPD points. Most professional boards have journals with CPD accredited articles and questionnaires. If you want something new, feel free to try MyCPD, an online provider of verified clinical and ethical articles from industry specialists that you can read any time. MyCPD also keeps track of your points and submits it to the HCPSA.
